Match report Sat 23rd February – Teignmouth 1st V Okehampton
With another season almost over the last home match was upon us. It started well for Teigns with Okehampton knocking on giving Teigns the first scrum. The scrum was won but the ball went dead following a kick. With Okehampton in possession Mayne put in a great tackle. The first line-out of the game went to Okehampton and the ball was stolen by captain, Franklin. A succession of kicking followed which resulted in a Teign’s line-out which was lost. Great pressure was shown by Mayne whose tackle caused Okehampton to go into touch. Teign’s line-out was not straight, Okehampton scrum won. Pressure again from Teigns created a line-out in Teign’s favour won in the air by Bilham which was followed by great hands to Dowrick then Franklin. A high tackle from Okehampton gave Teigns the opportunity of the first points, Mayne kicked for posts, 3-0.
Another succession of kicks was followed by Cooper making good ground. Mayne kicked over the top, Okehampton gained possession but were quickly tackled and another penalty was given to Teigns within reach of posts. Mayne kicked for posts, 6-0.
Okehampton were pushing up but ball was stolen by Bilham who made ground. Stolen by Okehampton and despite Teigns pressure of defence Okehampton created the first try opportunity of the game, 6-5.
Okehampton were in possession and kicked to make ground. Teigns went into touch and Okehampton won their line-out. They used their wing but Teign’s defence held until Okehampton passed back cross the pitch to score on the far wing, 6-10.
Teigns gained a penalty and kicked to touch but lost the ball until Okehampton kicked from the back of the ruck, Teigns were back in possession but went into touch. Okehampton won their line-out but knocked on giving Teigns an advantage. Teigns couldn’t break Okehampton’s defence and after a succession of kicks and penalties in Okehampton’s favour Teigns won their line-out only to have the ball stolen and a converted try scored, 6-17.
Despite Dowrick making a break before passing and Okehampton conceding a penalty there was no further score before half time. Teigns began the 2nd half with possession and were pushing up. Great pressure was seen from Wright and Teigns continue to make ground. Teigns gained a penalty from Okehampton kicking in the ruck. Teigns kicked for a line-out in home corner which was won, try Gray. Converted by Mayne, 13-17.
Okehampton quickly came back with a converted try of their own after stealing the ball when Teigns won Okehampton’s line-out, 13-24.
There appeared to be problems with the scrum wheeling many times causing play to slow. Mayne was in possession and kicked over the top catching it himself and passed out to the wing who were taken into touch. A penalty to Teigns was kicked to touch and the line-out won. Carden kicked to home corner and the ball was kicked back by Okehampton and caught by Lidstone who made great ground with a run up the pitch. Teigns were pushing up with an advantage. When Teigns went back to their advantage and kicked for line-out it was called not straight, Okehampton scrum. Okehampton won their scrum but the ball was quickly stolen, try for Scott, 18-24.
With all to play for, Okehampton lost their line-out. Teigns kicked for ground and Okehampton kicked back. A penalty was awarded to Okehampton and when they won their line-out the opportunity came for the final try of the game taking the final score to 18-31.
