Match report Saturday 5th April – Teignmouth 1st V Winscombe.
Both players and supports knew what an important game was ahead to maintain the place in the league. Teignmouth had the pleasure of playing up hill for the first half and with early possession and a good run from Carden and then a knock on by Winscombe things started well. The next scrum was also with Teigns; however, they knocked on giving Winscombe a scrum which they won but the ball was intercepted by Bilham. Penalty in the ruck for holding on, Winscombe kicked for line-out, won, created a maul and scored the first try of the match, 5-0.
Teigns were quickly back in possession when they won their lineout with a penalty advantage. The ball was kicked across the pitch to Captain Parsons. Winscombe gained possession but knocked on giving Teigns another scrum. There was a succession of scrums which resulted in Winscombe possession out to their backs. They were quick to come up but were stopped by a great tackle from Hellier. A hard tackle from Gray caused a forward pass by Winscombe. However, eventually Winscombe were awarded a penalty, won their scrum and scored, 10-0.
Teigns were pushing up with an advantage, using pods and made it over the line but the ball was held up. With the goal line drop out Teigns were back in possession and an advantage again. A succession of kicks followed, followed by 3 scrums. The 3rd scrum created an opportunity for Winscombe taking the half time score to 17-0.
Teigns were now going downhill with the hope of it being a game of 2 halves. Winscombe won their lineout, but a penalty was awarded to Teigns. They kicked for lineout, won and a try was scored by Hayward, converted by Mayne, 17-7.
With Teigns back in the game we saw Hellier run down the wing and kick over the top. Winscombe were awarded a scrum but knocked on. Kicking followed on both sides with the final kick creating a lineout for Teigns. Lineout was deemed not straight and Winscombe were awarded a scrum. They won the scrum, but the ball was quickly stolen, try for Woolnough, converted by Mayne, 17-14.
Today was a game of many scrums, Winscombe were next and won their scrum and kicked. Teigns won their lineout, Franklin was looking close to the line but Winscombe were defending well. A penalty came for Teigns, so the chance was taken to even the score with a kick taken by Mayne to take the score to 17-17.
Winscombe won a lineout but knocked on, the ball was quickly picked up by Bilham with an advantage. Kicking between teams resulted in a lineout for Teigns, not straight. Winscombe scrum, won but again quickly stolen, try for Dowrick, 17-22. The game continued but neither team made it over the line again leaving the final score at 17-22 to Teignmouth.
