Match report Saturday 12th April – Papa John’s Community Cup Teignmouth v Weston-Super-Mare.
Supported by Papa John’s pizza brand the community cup runs after the league season finishes as a knockout competition. 15 teams put themselves forward for the Regional 2 South Shield, however 5 teams withdrew giving their opposition walk overs in the first round. Weston-Super-Mare V Teignmouth was 1 of only 2 matches going ahead in the 1st round.
Teignmouth have not played at Weston-Super-Mare since 2017 so many of those attending have never been to the club. However, Geoff Webber had with him a programme from 25th April 1970 with both himself and John Wise being on the team sheet. When shared with Weston-Super-Mare they also knew several of the names from their team.
Being such a dry, calm day the game began with Weston in possession and moving quickly. The 1st scrum of the day went to Weston which they won and were then awarded a penalty. The penalty was taken quickly and Weston were pushing up. Penalty to Teigns who kicked for lineout, which they won. Bond was pushing up before passing back in. The ball was knocked on, Weston possession with the advantage. Weston kicked, advantage over, Teigns kicked back. Weston were quickly in 22 with possession and gained the 1st try of the day for Captain Young, converted by Tilsley, 7-0.
The game was back at a Weston scrum which they won but good pressure was seen by Teign’s Captain, Parsons. The ball was stolen by Teigns but quickly intercepted back by Weston creating another try for Weston’s Captain, Young, bringing the score to 12-0.
Weston were pushing up with the advantage, advantage over and the ball was stolen by Teigns, Teign’s advantage. They kicked for touch and won the lineout then kicked for territory. Weston then gained possession but this was quickly lost in the ruck when the ball was won by Franklin. However, Weston did the same back and when they stole the ball in the ruck Bord scored and the try was converted by Tilsely, 19-0 to Weston.
The battle continued and we saw Johns steal the ball in a Weston lineout. Weston lineout not straight and Lidstone steal the ball when Weston lost another lineout. Despite this there was no change in the score for half time.
As the 2nd half commenced there was hopes of last week’s 2nd half turn around when Teigns were losing 17-0 but went on to win 17-22. Weston were pushing up fast with possession when Ford ripped the ball and a high tackle gave Teigns the advantage. A good run was seen by Webber and then the game went back to the advantage. Kicked for lineout and won, great pressure was seen from Johns. Simmons was there when Teigns won their lineout and Teigns were awarded a penalty for offside. Teigns won another lineout, maul and try for Webber, 19-5.
Weston was back in possession and some great tackling was seen from Teign’s defence. Weston knocked on and Teigns won their scrum but went into touch. Teigns won possession back but the ball was again stolen by Weston, try to Weston, 26-5.
Again, some great play was seen. Gray picked up the ball at the back of a lineout. Weston lost a linout due to Teign’s pressure. Weston knocked on, gave Teigns 2 more penalties and Bilham had a great run, kicking over the top. The ball was picked up by Weston but a great tap tackle by Gray stopped him. Despite all this Weston could not be stopped and a try from Light, converted by Tilsely bought the score to 33-5. This was quickly followed by another try, converted by Tilsley, 40-5.
In true Teign’s spirit they did not give up. Teigns won their next lineout and great handling was displayed by Bond. 2 penalties followed for Teigns and they won their next lineout with an advantage. Back to the advantage, kicked for lineout, won and gained a penalty in the 22. With little time left it was a try for Bilham, which he converted himself to bring the final score to 40-12.
