Easter Weekend at Teignmouth RFC
Our 150th Season has featured a wealth of research and recollections of the history of our beloved Teignmouth R.F.C.
On Easter Saturday we were reminded (if we needed reminding) that history is being made each and every season – in many ways, and for all of our many teams.
The Coronation Cup, now in its third year and in many ways the epitome of all the club stands for as we play each other for the joy of it and all we have achieved throughout the club’s history. On three occasions now we have attracted the most enormous crowds, of all ages, from both towns and the surrounding area (not to mention two visitors from the U.S.A.!) to experience a great rugby match with our very own past and present players in a true challenge and played in the true spirit sport.
The match followed on from Easter Friday when the club hosted 5 Women’s teams competing for the Estuary Trophy is pretty atrocious conditions.
It is easy to assume that these events just ‘happen’ but in truth the planning and effort put in by a team of staff and volunteers underpins each and every event. The events over the holiday weekend brought all these elements together in a very successful way for our Rugby community.
Over the weekend well in excess of 100 volunteers committed several hundred hours of their time and energy to ensure the success of the various events. Too many to name but if you were one of them then thank you and WELL DONE!
A couple of afterthoughts!
Having welcomed in excess of 1500 members and guests through our gates on Good Friday and Saturday, more members and supporters turned up on Sunday for even more activities, including over 100 booked in to enjoy the popular Bitton Park Sunday Lunch. By 4.00 p.m. there were several ‘workers’ close to collapsing, so I hope that they have had a chance to recover!
The Coronation match was listed somewhere as ‘The Decider’, with Dawlish proving worthy champions. At a similar time, the World Snooker timetable showed their final to be the best of 35. I feel sure that the supporters will agree that the Coronation Cup could also become the ‘best of 35’ or even better to be celebrating its own 50th anniversary! That could potentially take us up to 2057 and allow the next generation to enjoy the event!
