The Parson & Clerk Challenge for the Coronation Cup 2025 1st half

By Lorna Gray
Report
What a day! Firstly, a massive thank you to Byron Woods who kindly offered to take my camcorder to film this game so that I could take stills. The Coronation Cup, originally planned to be a standalone event as part of the celebrations for the Coronation of King Charles, proved so popular that we have now had 3 such contests, with this year’s being felt to be a great way to conclude Teignmouth’s 150th rugby season. It would be the third of three, and the big decider! Three years ago, the gauntlet was laid down by some of the Teignmouth RFC players who came from Dawlish and its surrounding areas. This was a match between people who have played across a timespan straddling over 30 years and 2 towns. Previous captains and other very experienced players beautifully balanced with some of the young and upcoming talent for which Teignmouth RFC is well renowned. Brothers playing together again, and a father and son combining helped to fuel the pride and passion. Although divided between Dawlish and Teignmouth, this was a group of current and ex-players from all over the country, coming back to play at the crucible that is Bitton Park. This day was all about pride in a town, passion for a club, and a will to inspire future generations of TRFC players and supporters. There is nothing like a local derby to arouse passion in players and enthusiasm in a crowd and so when that rivalry is even closer to home, a great day is almost inevitable.
