22nd November Men’s 1st XV. Crediton V Teignmouth. Geoff Warne memorial Cup.
The Geoff Warne memorial cup is in its 5th year and Teignmouth arrived in high spirits with the cup in mind. Geoff was a big part of some of the players lives and is fondly remembered as being junior chairman as well as a coach. Outside of the rugby he was a teacher for many years at TCS and was the former captain at Crediton RFC.
Crediton were just below us in the league at the start of the match and the last time Teignmouth played them Crediton won by just 1 point in the closing minutes of the game at Bitton Park.
The game at Crediton appeared very even, with both teams getting close to the try line on several occasions. Teigns were the first to be defending their try line and when Crediton got over the line the ball was held up. It was a kicking game with the ball going back and forth. It wasn’t long before Crediton were defending their try line, but the penalty went against Teigns. Crediton were then defending their try line again and gained another penalty, a great tackling was seen by Alex Ford but then Crediton were awarded another penalty for Teigns not rolling away and went for posts, 3-0. This was soon followed by 2 more penalties and another kick for posts, 6-0. This was not the end of their scoring run and just prior to half time Crediton went over the line scoring the first try of the day with a converted try, 13-0.
Teigns came back for the 2nd half fighting and took advantage of a penalty they were awarded with Jack Mayne slotting it through the posts, 13-3.
Crediton won possession off the back of the scrum and kicked to touch. They won their lineout and scored 20-3. A series of penalties followed and when Teigns won their scrum and the ball went to Jack Mayne he headed straight for the line, scoring a try under the posts and followed by converting his own try, 20-10.
Crediton came back with one more converted try taking the score to 27-10 before the final whistle and the cup was presented to Crediton to hold until the next match on 7th March at Bitton.
Man of the match was awarded to Alex Ford, by Teignmouth and Jamie Gray, by Crediton.
