
Teignmouth Women’s first game of the season was under the lights and it was the first time they have entered the Devon Cup. They were against Newton Abbot who are a league above so knew it was going to be a tough game. Teignmouth welcomed several new players and it was great to see a full team with substitutes.
Newton quickly took the lead with a try giving a 0-5 lead. Newton gave away several penalties and ran into touch on the wing. However, they still scored again taking the lead to 0-10.
New to Teignmouth, Warwick was seen making some great tackle, along with Price but the score crept up to 0-30.
Teigns won a penalty, and a great run was seen by the backs but unfortunately the ball was lost. Another penalty to Teigns was followed by great leg drive from Mclellan but again the ball was lost. 3rd penalty in a row to Teigns in their 22 which was kicked out of danger by Evans. Keyte put in a great tackle which took the match to half time.
The match continued and despite the score Teigns continued their fight. They were quickly rewarded when Keyte scored a try in her debut match. The conversion hit the post, taking the score to 5-30.
Teigns created a maul, they lost the ball but quickly turned it back over then gained a penalty. Teigns kicked to touch and won the lineout and gained another penalty. However, Newton came back and scored a try 5-35. Teigns gained possession from the kick and Meacham scored a try, successfully converted by Price, 12-35.
Newton scored again for a busy stand at Bitton Park but was closely followed by Keyte scoring her 2nd try of the match taking the score to 17-40. Newton Abbot still found time for one more converted try before the final whistle taking the final score to 17-47. Forward of the match was awarded to 2x try scorer Abbie Warwick and back of the match went to try scorer Elly Meacham.
