Bustins Back with a Brace

Teignmouth U14s 39 – 5 Tiverton U14s

On another beautiful sunny morning Teignmouth under 14’s travelled up the M5 to play Tiverton. They played some good rugby in patches on a very muddy pitch and against a spirited Tiverton side who never gave up and gave the young Teign’s some real issues at ruck time and in the loose.

The game started with Tiverton firing into the Teign’s with their abrasive rucking game and strong running. The Teign’s defence held out well and eventually they turned the ball over and started to play. Once the Teign’s started to retaining possession they quickly realised that playing heads up rugby and moving their opposition around the field would be the way to win this game and that they could cut through the opposition defence with the runners they have within the team.

Strong running from No.8 Ben Steel Flood, Fly Half Oli Nicks and Centre Charlie Doolan gave Tiverton a lot to think about, especially with the Teign’s working hard to support their players. There were also some good strong runs made by Prop Logan Wooley and 2nd Row Thomas Walters.

Even with it being heavy underfoot the Teign’s played at times some really exciting expansive rugby. But then at other times they also lost the heads, dropped their work level and allowed themselves to be very loose at ruck time and gave away far too many turnovers. This will be an area they will have to improve on for the tougher games to come.

That said it was a difficult game to play in and watch as there were far too many strange decisions which caused confusion and frustration to the players. In a game that had no flow the young Teign’s will have learnt a lot.

The pack worked hard in patches today and they know that when they switch off the opposition will hurt you and turn you over. When we switched off today THEY SCORED. This was a wake up call and ALL players need to work for each other for the whole game.

Reading this back it seems a little bit negative in its content but I am writing this as a frustrated coach. And on the whole the team played well today but we can be a lot better and this will be our aim for next week.

A special mention to Louix Bustin who played his first game since his enforced break. He started the game on the wing and helped himself to two well worked trys and made some lovely runs. It was good to see him back on the field. And Happy Birthday to our star hooker Jack Parr.

Try Scorers: 2x Charlie Doolan 2x Louix Bustin 2x Ollie Nicks 1x Thomas Walters
Conversions: 2x Finn Addiscott

Well done to you all
