However, Teignmouth were well on top in the first half thanks largely to the forwards standing up well to the visitors’ more experienced pack, and some clever play from 1st XV regular Stef Walker at scrum-half.
Couch increased the lead with a penalty on the half-hour, before hooker Andy Webber broke through three despairing tackles to give the home side a sizeable lead at half-time.
The second half saw less in the way of try-scoring opportunities – Barnstaple managedone to narrow the gap, but their defence started to creak in the latter stages, and they had to resort to conceding penalties, two of which Couch kicked to complete the scoring.
So, an impressive start to the new term for the seconds, with good performances from Walker, Crouch and man of the match Woolnough. Tomorrow, they take the short trip to Totnes to try to consolidate.
