Report by Paul Williams

Teignmouth 2nd XV took the journey to Cullompton after a difficult few weeks of rugby but with possibly the strongest side that they have been able to field this season. The back line was bolstered with the return of Chris Jones and Lewie Byrmand in the centre, both man mountains at around 18st apiece, with the pack being strengthened with the return of Chris Day, Ben Smith and Mike Muir.

The game started brightly for the Teigns with them taking the game to their much bigger opponents. However, some slack tackling saw the early pressure being wasted and allowed Cullompton to take an early 7-0 lead. The Teigns showed great togetherness against a much bigger pack and were by far the stronger side going into the late stages of the first half with “The Unit” Chris Jones going over for a score that Callum Couch converted.

The second half saw The Teigns take the lead with a fantastic 45 metre penalty by Callum Couch who kicked superbly all afternoon, but this was short lived as Cullompton piled on the pressure with their big pack and centres and regained the lead with an unconverted try.

A positional change on the wing saw Danny Walters come in for impressive James Manning and he literally stole the show for the Teigns. Some fantastic back play saw the ball wide to Walters who beat four would-be tacklers to race 50 metres and score in the corner what could be the 2nd team try of the season. Cullompton hit back in the last 10 minutes with a well worked try but the conversion was again missed and the writing seemed on the wall for the Teigns with three replacements being needed.

However, the Teigns had the last laugh when the outstanding Walters scooped up a kick through and again beat a few would be tacklers to score far out wide but with the conversion slotted over effortlessly by Couch from the Touch line it put the game out of reach for Cullompton and the Teigns stole an excellent away victory.
