Tough opposition brings good lessons!

After last week’s solid performance we were hoping to carry that momentum into today’s game but with the team being thin on the ground and only one substitute it proved difficult for them, especially with Ivybridge having almost double our numbers.
We played 8 a side over a total of 4 x 10 minute sessions and I think the coaches & parents deserve a special mention today braving the freezing temperature and biting wind to cheer on and encourage the boys. Very dedicated! Luckily the sun came out for us after a while!
Everyone knew this would be a tough game from our last meeting. Their huge tackling, big hitters and speed in particular we all remember well, but our boys weren’t phased by the recollections. We began positively and finished in the same manner and in the post match comments Ben said how proud he was of the team determination and vigour to carry on despite the ferocity of the match. There were a couple of early tries from the opposition but quick assessments from the Teigns meant they were then able to spot the pattern and James made a lively try saving tackle taking the player into touch whilst in the following set of plays Archie managed to strip the ball and regain possession.
Alex T made some amazing breaks today with two ended in tries for him and two of the others setting tries up for Archie and James . Strings of passes between the boys to try and find the space followed this up but unfortunately Ivybridge had us marked and when a couple of long passes were made out to the wing Ivy took their chance with a seamless interceptions and uncontested tries. Teigns shook it off to come straight back at them, with a fantastic team try with the ball going through every pair of hands eventually allowing James to get over the try line.
As time went on there were a few loose balls and lack of support at the ruck allowed Ivy to stretch away from us but with a bit of insight from the coaches the boys were made aware of the need to support each other and not isolate themselves away from their teammates. More try saving tackles came preventing further opposition scoring in the last ten minutes (aside from a final intercepted pass and try) but much better from Teigns in defence and conscious support to team members meant the final whistle came after ten minutes with only one try, which is really positive and shows how hard the boys fought to defend their line. Elliott had the pleasure of rousing the cheers today.
After match discussions between our 3 coaches/ helpers today (Ben, Matt, Lee) special mention was for the team’s general improvement in rucking and support play with a hope to learn from Ivy's tackling technique. Player of the week goes to Jake Wellington having been described as making and taking some of the biggest tackles of the match.
Looking forward to next week home to Kingsbridge! C’mon Teigns! ?
