After repelling a powerful and sustained early attack from the visitors, Teignmouth opened the scoring against the run of play through a superb counter attack. Samuel Rose feigned to kick from inside his own 22 but instead ran through the gap that opened in the Chiefs' defence. A well timed and accurate pass to Seth Boxall put him clear and he had too much pace for the covering defence and was able to touch down under the posts, leaving a straightforward conversion that Jack Gibbon duly slotted over.
There followed an extended period of Exeter Chiefs pressure, with them using their weight advantage to good effect. Despite committed defence from the hosts, Exeter Chiefs were able to convert this pressure into 3 tries, none of which their kicker was able to convert.
Teignmouth responded well and began to compete more effectively at the set pieces and breakdowns, eventually winning a penalty 5 metres out from the Chiefs' try line. Unfortunately they were unable to exploit this position as the game was stopped for a neck injury to Luke Jones. Half time was called and play halted until an ambulance had come and gone, taking Luke with them. The good news is that he was allowed home later that afternoon with no serious damage reported.
When play resumed it was Teignmouth who began more strongly, with Josh Poulter in particular causing Exeter problems at the breakdown and stealing the ball back on at least three occasions. This possession was turned into points with a well worked move involving several pairs of hands leaving Seth Boxall with a dash to the line for another converted try to bring the score back to 14 -15.
The match was now turning into a real humdinger, with neither side giving any quarter and the ferocity of the contacts increasing with every minute. Teignmouth eventually found a way to put Boxall clear again, although in a heart-stopping moment he decided to risk beating one last man in order to get in under the posts. The gamble paid off and Teignmouth now found themselves 21-15 to the good.
The Chiefs responded with great intensity and Teignmouth had to defend desperately as their opponents came close to scoring on several occasions. Exeter were camped under the posts when they conceded a penalty at the final scrum of the game, and with great relief scrum-half Jack Webb booted the ball out to secure victory for the home side.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with Luke for a swift recovery.
