Teignmouth Colts hosted near neighbours Torquay for what proved to be a very competitive local derby.

Teignmouth opened the scoring after 10 minutes, following a flowing backs’ move from a set scrum, Dom Twine found space wide on the left and sprinted in for an unconverted try. Shortly afterwards Joe Simmonds broke through Torquay’s mid field defence to score a try under the posts, which he converted himself. Leading 12-nil after just 15 minutes it looked like Teignmouth would take control of the game, but Torquay hit back with two unconverted tries before the end of the first half.

After just five minutes of the second half Teignmouth centre Callum Selley scored the best try of the game. Receiving the ball deep in his own half he opened up the Torquay defence with a perfect show and go and ran to the line to score a try under the posts, which was converted by Simmonds. Again Torquay hit back first with a penalty and then with a converted try to take a one point lead.

However, Teignmouth continued to pressurise the visitors defence, but to no avail until Torquay conceded a penalty two minutes from time right in front of the posts due to an act of ill discipline. Simmonds was successful with the kick to give the Teigns a two point lead. Teignmouth survived a tense couple of minutes to finish 22-20 winners.

This was an excellent performance from a greatly improving young Teignmouth Colts squad and helps maintain a 100% winning record at home this season. Callum Selley was awarded man of the match for his try.
