Weston prove too strong

TRIBUTE SOUTH WEST ONE (WEST)

TEIGNMOUTH 12 WESTON-SUPER-MARE 47

Anyone from Teignmouth looking at the league table before this game would have had a sense of foreboding. Although the Teigns had made a steady start to their second season at Level 6, and found themselves just above mid-table, Weston's record was quite formidable, with nine wins from nine and 44 points from a possible 45.

However, there was some encouragement for the home side in the first quarter, as dogged defence restricted the visitors to just two James Mackay penalties. Nevertheless, it was clear that Weston, with their domination up front and sharp passing and running in the backs, were not going to be denied for long. With the lion's share of possession and territory, in the 24th minute they eventually managed to punch holes in the Teigns' back line and full back Harry Jones touched down for the first of seven tries, and Mackay added the conversion.

From then on it was really a matter of how respectable Teignmouth could keep the score line, and to give them credit they battled all the way. However, Jones added a second try three minutes after his first, and despite a well-worked try from Dan Force on the half-hour mark, a try on the brink of half-time from Matt Watkins killed off any ideas of a fight back.

Teignmouth managed to secure far more possession in the second half, but some basic errors let them down, and usually resulted in them being punished as the visiting backs went to work with a vengeance. Scrum-half Hayden Tuttiett set the scene with a 43rd minute try before the Teigns' well-rehearsed lineout catch-and-drive resulted in them being awarded a penalty try which Matt Laventure converted.

But Watkins, Chris Young and Dan Spellman all managed to take advantage of the home side's inability to build on this and on the final whistle the scoreboard was somewhat generous to visitors, for all of their domination.

Coach Marc Dibble saw plenty of positives from his side, but bemoaned the fact that they tend to switch off from time to time during matches, and are then prone to making basic errors for which they are almost always punished. He warned that this would need to be addressed in training this week, as they face yet another testing game this Saturday away to second-placed Thornbury.
